Honolulu Advertiser '08–'09 ‘Ilima Award
There’s nothing we don’t like about Mix Cafe — except that it’s not closer to the Advertiser newsroom. Bruno Iezzi’s Beretania Street cafe is the closest thing this city has to a true Euro cafe, where the menu is short but strong, the artisan coffee is brewed to perfection and the day’s menu items are displayed behind a glass counter guard so you can see what you’re dealing with. And what you’re dealing with (besides large crowds) are sandwiches made with imported meats and cheeses (think speck and aged provolone), locally grown produce and housemade pasta sauces with added goodies like Iezzi’s own spicy-sweet Italian sausage. The citrus-colored room is the brightest spot in Downtown — and it serves the best roast pork sandwich you’ve ever had the privilege of eating.
Every ingredient has a purpose — every one is meant to be there. Meant to be tasted. Meant to perfectly complement the others. When was the last time you tasted something that made you want to stop chewing just so you could taste it a little longer? Mix Cafe is the prince charming of restaurants. The culinary equivalent of a Renaissance man. Good food, prepared according to old-fashioned values of freshness, wholeness and goodness, served in a modern setting, with a mind for ecological responsibility.
The owner is a very pleasant man who’s always striking up conversations with his customers. You can tell he really loves his work.
Paninis are the must-try — especially the “Si-Si Oui-Oui” which combines Italian Rosemary ham with French Comte cheese on a French baguette. Four yeses for sure. The baked-on-site carrot cake, loaded with shredded carrots, walnuts, cranberries and raisins, is a good take out treat.
Mix Cafe specializes in homemade desserts and sandwiches made of imported ingredients.
…the food, though neither fancy nor complex, is, from the breakfast waffle with berries and unsweetened cream to the pasta with house-made sausage, stand-out, shining fare in a sea of hastily prepared lunches…
5 Stars! Bruno Iezzi offers what has become his signature sandwiches: a tender roasted pork sandwich, a roasted turkey sandwich made with meat from a whole turkey he roasts daily, and a sandwich filled with fresh bufala mozzarella, grape tomatoes and mushrooms sauteed in rosemary-infused olive oil. It was the latter that stopped us mid-chew, and prompted a member of our lunch crew to admit, rather sheepishly, that the sandwich was so good it made her weepy.
The food is incredible.

Mix Cafe was founded by Bruno Iezzi in downtown Honolulu in February 2007. Bruno was born and raised in Italy. At age 13, listening the happy sounds of the restaurant next door, he knew he wanted to be involved in the food business. After attending culinary school in Italy, Bruno worked in London, New York City, Tokyo, Seoul, and San Francisco in the front and back of the house — from busboy to manager, dishwasher to head chef.
After eight years in New York City, Bruno came up with a concept for his own cafe and found the perfect location while on vacation in Honolulu. Mix Cafe has been serving the diners of Honolulu ever since, and expanded into a new location in May 2009.
Bruno operates and head chefs the two Mix Cafe locations with his wife Kim Induck — it’s a local, family business.
Mix Cafe is about care. Bruno has designed everything on the Mix Cafe menu himself from scratch. Every sandwich, pasta dish, and dessert has just it what needs and no more. The ingredients at Mix are local and organic when possible, and always fresh.
Our food looks great and tastes great, and we’ll make sure you get exactly what you want and get it quickly.
